Is Sarah Paulson really that well known? I mean, even if you factor out the whole Jossverse, I knew of Nathan, Adam, Ron and Jewel before Firefly. I read Sarah Paulson's page on imdb and still don't recognize her from anything else. Is she mostly known for Deadwood?
The critical praise for Firefly was there -- but there were a lot of bad reviews. Not everybody got it, certainly not to the extent of Serenity (nowhere close, in fact). The fact the Firefly review copy was "The Train Job", I believe, probably didn't help.
I actually remember the reviews being more mixed than gold. And the DVD review is the movie review except truncated -- I should know, the Chron is my hometown paper.
But, more importantly, I just got next week's TV Guide in the mail, and Joss has an adorkable guest column in it. I can't post it as a link, because I can't find a link, but it's so cute I had to come here and burble. Here's the last few paragraphs...
And what of me? My short-lived series FIREFLY was the basis for the epic action film "Serenity" (available on DVD Dec. 20! I have little or no shame), and the future will see even more incarnations of this visionary work, as it returns to TV as SERENITY: THE FIREFLY YEARS, then back to film as "Firefly: Serenity's Sequel", back to TV as SEREENIFLY, and finally end as the direct-to-eyeglasses series CHOOSE A DAMN NAME ALREDY. I promise it'll be as heartwarming and exciting as the originial "Serenity", available on DVd Dec. 20. (Explain again this thing you call shame..)
That's all I can tell you, except forone last thing. VERONICA MARS will still be on. VERONICA MARS will still be on. We clear about that?
dottikin: that quote is Joss-ome! I've already pre-ordered three copies of Sereenifly on hi-def widescreen DVD at Amazon.com (for delivery on Aug 14, 2009.)
The Chronicle's article is pretty much the same one they printed for the movie's theatrical release back in September, and I recall being pleased with it at the time. Kind of backhanded with its compliments (there were things reviewers didn't like about the series? What's not to love about anachronistic firearms and countrified verbiage?) but positive in tone, not touching on any of the special features. This is more of a movie review than a DVD review.

Firefly receieved "generally unfavorable reviews"? I remember when it came out, and I'm pretty sure the critical praise was there...

MySerenity, I'd never heard of Sarah Paulson, either.

P.S. I loved Paulson in Down With Love.
