Buffy the Complete Series DVD Set (R1) release date. The 39 disc boxset will be released in North America on December 14th at a recommended price of $400. Though Amazon are selling it for $248.

::sniffles:: I want... If only I hadn't bought them all individually.

Can't wait to see the packaging. But...dilemma! Whether to splurge and get this some time soon or wait for a possible re-release some day. The thing's syndicated like crazy, especially on Canadian television, and if I have the opportunity to get someone into the series I can always rent (from the video store or Zip.ca, Canada's answer to Netflix). Then again, it'd be nice to own and see all the extras little by little.

Maybe wait to see if they release a Complete Angel, then splurge. This is gonna hurt the bank account...

I have no doubt they're going to do a complete Angel boxset but I'm wondering whether Fox will do an Ultimate Buffyverse boxset featuring the 250 odd episodes of Buffy and Angel.

An Ultimate Buffyverse boxset with a few new extras, interviews, maybe some scripts to key episodes, with one of the better episodeguides, a list of crossover episodes etc.

I would buy that and I still have all the episodes.

Is this a real deal, or is it just Amazon.com sticking all 7 sets in a box? I don't know how they're going to do this unless there's some kind of special addition to the thing...

Does anyone know if they're also planning a R2 release of this?

Storyteller the R2 release is out in the UK tomorrow (limited to 10,000 copies only).

Fox UK webpage for the Complete Buffy boxset.

The region 2 has been known for ages, all 7 seasons in a nice leather bound box with a letter from Joss.

You'll find it here at play, looks like Amazon have sold out. Great price too, makes it so that even if you've got a few of the seasons, it's not asking much more than you'd pay for the missing ones seperately.

There is no mention of any additional footage included in this set...Very disapointing!

Its just a repackaging, I think. The older seasons will probably go out of print in a few years and new fans will buy this. I just noticed that "my so called life" on DVD is out of print and used copies are being charged for 100 dollars on Amazon, crazy.

As I understand it, it would be much more expensive to have any additional footage, extras or commentaries on this set, as they would incur the costs of reauthoring etc.

So if you ever want to see the pilot episode or the "Lucy Hanover" trailer get an official release - you'll probably have to wait for HD-DVD.

I would like to see the "Lucy Hanover" trailer.

What is the Lucy Hanover trailer?

I remember seeing that when I first watched the show(and this is years before I even got hooked). I think you can download it on file sharing programs. It was a good trailer.

I've uploaded the trailer, here (link removed).
The unaired pilot can be found on buffy.nu and on various torrent-sites.

That trailer is amazing. Very, very cool.

This makes me want to read the Buffy books and comics too, just to see what this Lucy is like.

According to the Amazon site, this is only a repackaging -- no new material. (To which I say: Yay! 'Cause I'm already broke!)

I'm amazed at how much more I enjoy season 7 now than when I first saw it. I think I was too tense and worried about how it would end to relax and just savor the last year. As a Spuffy and Spike Redemptionista, I analyzed every epi for clues!

Rewatching it this past summer and now on DVD reminded just how good it was overall. Spike's death always makes me cry but I love how it was done and love how Joss wrote and directed that scene.

The same thing happened when I rewatched season 4. I was one fan who always enjoyed season 4 and liked Riley but I had forgotten how entertaining and fun it was. This seems to be the consensus of a lot of fans.

Not a bad price - cheaper than buying each individually from Amazon. I still have to contact a few places to see if I can broker a discount for the Multimedia Project, but the prices on these sets might work for un in the meantime.

Thanks a lot for that Puck, though I had seen it before, it was years ago and somehow I managed to lose my copy.

Thanks so much, Puck. I never saw the trailer. It reminds me of how cool the Slayer mythology is in general and how so many more stories could be told in this 'verse. Stories that would grab a wide audience, methinks.

Count me as one who has gained a whole new appreciation for Season 7 after getting the DVDs. I think it's a dynamite piece of work, overall.

Thanks, Puck. I've never seen the trailer, nor heard about it. And, since my DVDs did NOT arrive from Amazon, as expected, I've been depressed all weekend. I had really stocked up on my favorite marathon-watching snacks, etc. Oh, well, there's a holiday coming up, and I'm not one for parades and football on TV, so I'll catch up. But the trailer is a nice surprise, and it perked up my spirits.

For reasons that I hope are obvious to all, I have removed the link to the pilot found above.

Can anyone direct me to the removed link...I have never seen this trailer...

I also love Season Seven a lot more. Watching Storyteller right now. Heh.

I think it actually just gave me an even deeper appreciation of the show in general. Just seeing how far these characters have come, since Welcome to the Hellmouth.

Gonna start re-watching the whole series (one or two episodes a day) starting tomorrow.

I think the flaws of season 7 (Kennedy, the potentials, speeches.) are much less prononcued when you watch them in quick succession.

When it was on a weekly basis it felty a bit repetitive, in succesion it feels like one long story.

I just have to vent here as i finished S7 the other day and i mus get this off my chest.
I absolutely LOATHE Rona, as far as i am concerned she died on the bus from blood loss after they escape Sunnydale.
Every damn word out of her mouth was some kind of complaint. She was constantly whining about everything, which i think made me like Kennedy a little more sometimes because Kennedy didn't freak out every 2 seconds. In "Showtime" when Buffy hands Rona a sword and Rona complains "What's the point?", or later when Buffy asks Willow to do magic and Willow says she'll try and Rona says "Try?" to Willow, i just wanted to gut that little bitch right there. I just hated that she thought that she had the right to talk to Willow like that. Or these lovely lines from "Showtime" "You call this a safelocation?", "That's the plan? Spread out? That thing is gonna kill Buffy, and then it's gonna come after us.", then Rona was tolerable in "Potential", then a fabulous 2 episodes of none of her, then she was back in "Get it Done" where she had about one line which was quite nice, the same for "Storyteller", i will get back to "Lies My Parents Told Me" in a sec, but then in "Dirty Girls" right after the Godzilla thing, she feels the need to say "You people are even crazier than her", then "I came here for protection" as if she is some kind VIP that shouldn't have to raise a finger on her own, and then "Buffy doesn't care how many of us she puts into danger". Rona then continues in "Empty Places" at the end when she says "You know what? I am sick of your deal with this Spike guy" and then "You're being reckless", then the little bitch has the nerve to say "Ding dong the witch is dead", if only Dawn had slapped her as well as telling her to shut her mouth. Thankfully we were spared Rona for 2 more eps and she returned in "Chosen" only to have one line and then she dies (she does die!). The thing she says in LMPTM is the one that makes me hate her the most "How can Buffy take this for granted? I mean, he (Spike) lives in OUR house, we train with him" She considers herself an OUR, she thinks that Buffy's house is now somehow hers. All of those potentials are NOT an our, they are guests in Buffy's house and the fact that Rona considers Buffy's house hers as well in some way makes me want to kill her. It is Buffy, Dawn, and Willow's house as they LIVE there. Spike and Giles could say "our" as they live there as well. Xander and Anya do have their own places but they are part of the Gang, and the Gang is above everyone else. I love Andrew but at that point he was not close enough to include himself in an "our" statement.
I know that i have gone on and on about this but i HATE Rona sooooooooo very much and i am so happy that she is dead.

Let me just say, once again, that i LOVE S7. I wanted to put that in just to make clear that i do not hate S7 in any way, i just hate hate that unappreciative, bithcy, useless disgusting human being.

Wow! Dhoffryn, vitriolic, much?

LOL, no really, I agree with you, but on a much quieter level. Rona WAS a complainy little irritant. And I did want to smack her when she said "ding, dong..." about B.

Do you feel better? ;)

Yes, it does.
I do not think that there is a character on BtVS or Angel that i hate more. I don't like a few characters, i cannot stand some more, but Rona is #1.

Dhoffryn tone it down.

Dhoffryn - remember that for every Rona there is both an Amanda and a Vi. In the greater picture, the Ronas of this world are ephemera - did I just say that?

I am fine, i just had to rant a bit. I was arguing with someone ealier so i was a bit on edge and that contributed a bit to the whole "die rona die!" post.

As to the topic, i am kind of glad that there aren't any different special features in this because that would be an awful lot of money. Something that i think would be cool would be a DVD release of all the deleted scenes. They talk about so many deleted scenes in the commentaries and they haven't put any on the sets.

I think the dream "Buffy" set for me would be...

- All 7 Seasons digitally re-done, in hi-def (especially S1 and I really notcied a lot of grain in S7)

- The movie, with a (very funny, I'm sure) commentary from Joss, talking about all of the bad stuff

- The un-aired pilot

- DELETED SCENES. My god it would be so nice to see some fresh Buffy.

- The trailers from the WB and UPN (including the Lucy Hanover one)

- All of the special features from the original sets.

- Some new special features. Something I would've loved to have seen on one of the previous sets in the dissection of an episode. Starting with Joss' mind all the way to airing. We came close to this with Fury's OMWF feature but I think there was a lot more to be explored. Obviously unless something like this was taped it would be impossible, but I can dream.

- The Legacy of the Slayer - A featurette on the history of the Slayer, talking about old slayers, future slayers, and just the basic mythology.

- New commentaries, especially for S1. I would love new commentaries on episodes that didn't get them, but deserved them.
There's "Prophecy Girl", "Lie to Me", "Becoming", "Passion", "IOHEFY", "Graduation Day"

- OK this is really stretching... You know those interviews from the VHS tapes they had for about six episodes each from S1-3. I would really like to have those for all of the seasons, all of the episodes. What did Joss think of an episode. What did he really like? What did he really not like?

- And two supplemental gifts...

-Mr. Pointy replica
-A big-ass Watcher's Guide.

I can only imagine how much that would cost - I would buy it in a heartbeat. I'm porbably not going to buy this set. That is, of course, unless they announce some earth-shattering feature.

Don't get me wrong, my Buffy DVDs, along with my iPod, are the favourite things I own. But, I would love to see Buffy get the amazing treatment it really deserves.

Wow, I was looking at the list of commentaries...

"The Gift" doesn't have one either. Damn, they better release the Adam version of "Buffy - The Complete Series)

I like the idea of a combined Buffyverse DVD set that starts off with the first three season's of Buffy and then properly alternates the episodes of BtVS and AtS so you get to watch the crossover episodes without having to go and put in a new dvd or switch over to a different dvd. I also would love for the deleted scenes to be in it. More commentaries by Joss would be great and more insight into how he would've liked each season to go, anything he'd like to do differently and what his initial plans for season seven were going to be before he found out Amber Benson wouldn't be coming back. I would also love to see every main actor get at least a half hour to talk about their time on the show and what it meant for them, either alone or a long group session with questions submitted from the fans (and maybe questions that are voted on so it isn't the same old stuff asked all the time). I'd like to hear their own personal insights to what things meant to them because it seems to me that they were just as much a fan of the show as a lot of us are. I have the Farscape DVDs and they showed a lot of behind the scene stuff that was quite funny and interesting and that would be great to see extensive footage of stuff like that. That I might be willing to pay for the whole set together even though I already have the seasons all individually.

But, to save myself some money, I'm glad these are just the already released sets put together in one big set so I won't be tempted to go out and buy everything all over again.

Another thing I'd like to see on the DVDs are the "Previously on Buffy..." montages they showed before each episode. I miss having those, and it makes it easier to watch individual episodes on occasion. And I found them an enjoyable way to start each episode.

Ooh, definitely. I am happy that they put The Gift montage in as an Easter Egg for S7...

-A

Really? Where is the Gift montage? I still have never seen it, and I've been dying to. Is the easter egg on the R1 DVDs?

The Gift montage by itself is not as good as right before The Gift because it fits so well with the teaser for the episode. It's great that they finally gave it to U.S. fans, but it's a shame they didn't put it where it should have been. I want a copy of The Gift montage along with the teaser.

Don't the region 1 sets have the "previously"s, I thought it was just "The Gift" that didn't have it.

Suddenly it doesn't seem so bad that Region 1 sets got one more commentary (though an apparently good one) than region 2.

Nope, region 1 sets don't have any previouslys. I wish they did.
I figured out where the easter egg was. If anyone else doesn't know, it's on disk 6, under special features and then "featurettes." Press the left arrow from the "season overview" and a "B" lights up. That's where the Gift montage is.
Good to finally see it! I went through it frame by frame after i saw it the first time to see how many episodes I could recognize.
As for the complete Buffy Series – i still wonder who all will buy it, other than people who are just discovering the series. Most people who would want to own it are pretty dedicated fans, and most of them already own the separate sets. Adam_tvs, i like your idea for the extras that *should* be on there. Too bad they aren't, but i guess it also saves me from having to think about buying this...

acp - I agree - I don't know who would buy "The Complete Buffy Series" because most fans have bought the individual series as they were released and , other than a nice container box, there doesn't seem to be any reason to rebuy the episodes in the complete set. For people just discovering the series buying the complete series is alot to ask (a big expense). $250 divided by 7 seasons is still $35.71 per season - truthfully not a great deal - I paid no more than $39.99/season buying then as they were released.

I also wish the "Previously on Buffy..." were included in the sets.

Eventually, high-definition will crawl its way through the United States, and that means that they'll probably re-release these on Blu-Ray discs.

Yeah, I'd love to see all of the previouslies, the unaired pilot ... throw in the A&E Biography I heard about. Pretty much everything. But I am a drooling fanboy.

True Confession here - I don't own any Whedonverse DVDs. In fact I don't own a DVD player.
But this re-release of all seven seasons has just been the catalyst I needed to buy a player and the seven-season set too.

So, just to clarify, the excellent montage that begins "The Gift" is not on the season five disc where it belongs, but it is only on the season seven disc as an easter egg? Is that right?

Ok, firstly, lol, and I agree Dhoffryn. She must've died in the bus because she was definetely too rude and annoying to live in the buffyverse.
Secondly, Adam_tvs, I want that set that you described! I will die a happy woman if that comes out before I die. But mostly, I want more commentaries, multiple commentaries for the episodes would be nice, with the CAST too! All of them! And interveiws with the actors. And behind the scenes funnyness and seriousness. I need new Buffy images.
I managed to convince myself that Karen or whatever her name was in The Grudge was actually Buffy Summers, sent to Japan in disguise, because I desperatly need some sort of season 8. It sort of worked. I'm sad (interpret that either way).

ella, it depends which region discs you have. In R1 (North America, and the DVDs that I own), the Gift montage is not on the Season 5 disc where it belongs, but it is an easter egg on Season 7. But from what i understand, other regions (R2, at least), does inlcude the "previously"s, which means "The Gift" montage is shown, amazingly, right before "The Gift" where it belongs.

Freaks and Geeks did an amazing thing with their DVDs. First, they had the regular DVD set with all the episodes, commentaries, and cut scenes and the actors' auditions. At the same time, they released a DVD set with an extra disk with lots of extra out-takes and interviews, packaged it like a high school yearbook and that set is $120. One thing that is really cool about both DVD sets is that each episode has commentary, and some have more than one commentary. One episode has the show's gym teacher, math teacher and school counselor doing commentary in character, and it's so hilarious. Another commentary is done by fans.

Wouldn't it be cool if some fans could be selected to do commentary on Buffy? Another thing I'd love is for every single episode to have commentary. No Joss commentary on The Gift? That was probably the biggest surprise for me when that set was released. I expected that one. I would like more actors doing commentary on their character's pivotal episodes, like Nick Brendon on "The Replacement", along with the writer and director, or Amber Benson and Joss on "Family", just to name a couple of examples.

And everything that adam_tvs mentioned would be cool, especially The Legacy of the Slayer featurette. I love the slayer mythology.

We probably won't see any of this, but it's fun to dream.

I loved the Freaks and Geeks DVDs too, electricspacegirl. Especially since the show didn't even last a full season, it's incredible that they gave the DVD set such a great treatment, and had so many commentaries. Plus it's just a great show...

I doubt that 20th Century will ever go back and do more commentaries for Buffy now, but it is always nice to dream... The Gift, Prophecy Girl, and Becoming are eps particularly in need of commentary. Passion, too. And i would love to see fans and actors do them (although, to be honest, i think the writers usually do the best commentaries. And to be really honest, there are few commentaries that don't eventually bore me that weren't done by Joss. But i loved having Seth and Alexis contribute to the ones they did).

Hmm not sure I love the Fan commentary idea, I listened to the one on the new Alias set and it just kind of annoyed me.

I purchase these sets and listen to the commentaries for insight, from an acting, directing or writing standpoint. The fans can't really tell me anything I don't already know, and I can listen to some free gushing online if I ever need to.

I just looked at a bunch of pics for the Region 2 version, and it looks pretty cool.
I will most definitely buy the Region 1 version if it is anything like the R2 one. If this is just the 7 seasons all for sale at the same time, then no thank you, but if it is a nice, leather bound, actual collector's edition then i am so going to get it. The R2 one has a lot of pics of just Buffy, and not many other characters (like the season sets over there) but the R1 ones have various pics of all the characters and if they go this route then WOO HOO.
I am all excited for a BtVS DVD release, only a week ago i though that would never happen again!

The Freaks and Geeks DVD is the most ridiculously thorough DVD set in the history of the universe. 29 commentaries featuring every single actor and almost all the big backstage folk, well over an hour of deleted scenes, behind the scenes antics edited by a couple of the shows stars, and hours more video stuff. I love it. It's too bad that they can't do the same for Buffy.

On the other hand, it is so much easier to go way overboard on an 18 episode package than on a 255 episode package. You'd probably go nutty trying to put together the definitive 12 season "Wacky Adventures of Buffy & Angel" collectors DVD:)

The Buffy A&E special is on a DVD. It's on the r1 season 6 set, but I'm not sure if it mentions that it came from A&E. But it's definitely on there.

I am embarrassed to admit this, but, although I bought copies of all of the Angel and Buffy DVDs ( ... erm, twice), I haven't watched them yet, because I'm pacing myself through the books and graphic novels, so I can draw out my B/A fix for as long as possible. Don't want to get burned out.

Ocular - you are mighty! I am so pathetic that when I got the BtVS S7 DVDs (about 1pm on a mad lunchtime dash) that I opened then in the carpark just to look at the disc artwork. When I got home I excused myself to the family (they are used to my obsessions already) and watched the entire first half of the season on one go, finishing about 2am. I could probably have watched ep12 but those damned toilet breaks got in the way!

When I am not watching the DVDs, I am reading the BtVS books, magazines.....
