Today at Comic Con - the Joss Whedon Dark Horse panel.
Not only will Buffy season 8 and the Shepherd Book mini-series get discussed but Dr. Horrible as well. Kickoff starts at 1.30pm PT. ETA At the moment io9.com is live blogging from the event and we're getting great "as it happens" comments from our Whedonesque posters in attendance. And the big news is that there will be more Dr Horrible.
And if anyone comes across any reports, please do post the links in the comments section.
Tomorrow is the Dollhouse panel.

I think both. I am following Ven from Save Hiatus, comiccon, Felicia Day, Wil Wheaton, Quoter Gal, bix, mcookies, lioness, Dr Horrible, (I think I got everyone.) So far nothing in depth, but it's fun. (Kind of wish I was there, but then I see a picture of the crowds and I remember that I hate crowds... unless there is mud and/or a mosh pit.)
we've got a camera so we'll film some of it..
Yay. :D

Seriously, you did an amazing job last year deanna b, I wouldn't blame you if you just wanted to sit back and relax. But I also wouldn't blame you if you did your own account and there was some duplication ;).

Joss looks a little discheveled. Joss came out last year and talked about things he was going to be working on, and he's accomplished none of them, except Cabin In The Woods.
All of this is organized by Dark Horse. Joss has been collaborating with Scott Allie for years.
And there's this little thing they've put on the internet.
Introductions:
Melissa, Jed and Zach, the writers of Doctor Horrible.
Felicia, Moist, Nathan, Neil
Comedy bit between Nathan and Neil, Nathan pulls chair out so Neil falls on ground. "Whoops."
Would Joss ever consider approaching Russell T Davis with an idea for a musical episode of Torchwood? He'd like to approach RTD anyway, he's doing fine without him. Grumble, stealing my James, grumble.

How does anyone cope with devestating news? There's some sort of pster with a cat. Comfort of people around him and the stories he loves.
Kitty Pride asks: (and Joss says "Nice!!") Will Fray get her own series? He'll kill her, he doesn't know how to do anything else. No, he just doesn't have time right now.
Last scene of Doctor Horrible blog, Billy is just devestated, it's the stark reality of the situation. Doctor Horrible got everything he ever wanted, but Billy lost everything.
Which Jossy thing has he done that really stuck with him? Nathan: the last thing is always the one that sticks with him. The Hammer is his penis. That was Zach's line. The beginning patter of Brand New Day, Neil took six hours learning it on his iPod. "This appears as a moral dillema, though at first I... fuck."
Felicia is Twittering under the table. *hoot* In the homeless shelter, she had a beautiful pair of shoes that you never see, but she kept falling.
Melissa has on video tape Joss acting out Captain Hammer's part.
End of Brand New Day, they were going to have a dance number, but they couldn't afford it, so make him a giant. Green screen construction paper in a park. Neil had to sing it fast, chipmunk style, so they could slow it down, then they just used the take he did normally instead.

There will be another part of Doctor Horrible.
Joss, Nathan, Doogie. Doogie?? Nathan: Yes, it was a medical show you did years ago, it was really good. Neil: Oh, the heroin years.
Joss is older, and balder-slash-wiser than went they made Firefly. Any episode they make is a bonus, and any they can't, he can put on the internet now. This was a model for a new way to put out things, that are for us and not so much for *certain other people*. He works with studio execs, but...
And Doctor Horrible is about putting power in other hands. The wrong hands,
Neil came up with the "shoulder dance" during Freeze Ray. He did the magic thing with his fingers when he was bored, and they decided to use that.

THere will be more of Groupie #1. "Sorry, honey, I love you with all my heart, but..." "And I love you with my hammer."
Nathan: Felicia combines geeky with sexy-hot. She rides that fine line.
Was Xander the character who was to be outed instead of Willow? He was going to out everyone. He only has two tricks, gay, or dead. No, actually, that's not true. It was because Seth was leaving, and Oz will be back in the comic, BTW, but it was just that they needed something to follow Oz, so thought, well, it's college, she's experienting, and then it became a great romance.
What ever happened to Jesse, he was supposed to be Xander and Willow's best friend. Joss: Thank you for exposing my failure as a writer.
Nathan" Who's wearing a Hammer shirt? Yay. Anyone wearing a Doctor Hammer shirt? Get out. Who here is Moist?
Joss hates the "Shut up Dawn" at singalongs, but loves the poppers at the end of Under Your Spell.
What is your favorite musical. Joss: Sweeney Todd and Singing in the Rain. Felicia: Into the Woods, she was Cinderella in college, her mom says she was really good. Little Shop of Horrors, of course. South Park, Neil loved Les Miserables, and loved being in Rent. Moist likes LSoH, and also Hedwig and the Angry Inch.
Captain Hammer is... awesome He stands up and poses. Neil pulls the chair out from under him and he mock-falls.
Nathan apologized "I'm sort of a dick" to the extra who was supposed to touch him and he cringes, so he wouldn't feel bad.
They'll take video submissions for the Evil League of Evil for the DVD. Soundtrack downloads will be available in a couple weeks.

See, this is one of the many things I love about Joss; he has the integrity not to dump on or disavow his own work. Because no matter how vocally some aspect of the show(s) may be disliked, there is someone out there to whom it's the most important thing, and he doesn't cut their legs out from under them.

Joss mentioned that the soundtrack will be available for download in "a couple of weeks." This implies either:

b. They'll issue an Act IV "addendum" to the soundtrack later
Ideas? Answers?

Oh, that's right, yes someone did, no, it's not. It's not Nicholas Brendon either. Just an extra.

WHEN they made Firefly. (Sorry, weird typo.) The question was how Joss feels about starting another series when all his series always get horribly cancelled. So the first part was about Dollhouse, and then he's talking about Doctor Horrible after the mention of the internet. Sorry I didn't make that clear. Or evenly not completely opaque.

Love the fact that Joss hates the 'shut up Dawn' tendency at sing-alongs. I've never been to one of those, but it sounds like an unnecessary line. Plus, like others upthread, I actually really like Dawn. She's an interesting character.
Thanks for the updates everyone! Great typing there deannab! And also, how did gossi end up next to jewel? Will there be something to gossip (heh, only one extra letter needed) about soon?
So, how did the crowd react? Was it filled with fans, ending with thunderous applause? Did anyone "boo" Nathan, or was it just bix? ;)
Also very interested to find out if the Sing-Along will be an actual Sing-Along this evening and what the reception of it will be like. I'll stay tuned (except, only, probably not right now, because it's 4:20 here and I should really get some sleep ;)). Too bad I can't be there to meet up with fellow whedonesquers (all this time spent here, and I have no clue what most of you guys look like :)), should be fun. Any whedonesque meet-ups going on?

The ELOE application invitation is an amazing idea. (I kinda wish I owned a horse right now, so I could do weird digital manips of it's mouth!) With all these extras, I'm starting to anticipate a box-set sized release!
If that wasn't SMG I wonder if they consciously hired a look-alike? She does seem to be quite prominently seated next to the groupies, is all I'm sayin'.
ETA I would pay many, many crisp dollars for a sing-along comic. A CD and the basic tale, told in comic form, with a 'Play Track *' at each appropriate point.
(Actually, I lie. I would probably just get it with my credit card...)

Jewel Staite misses her Shiny. She doesn't miss her ruffly dress. Bob Picardo is awesome. Now the Stargate writers are promising to pillage the cast of Firefly one by one until they've got them all. Jewel wants to make Nathan get cast as a wraith so that he would have to put on a bunch of prosthetics. The next question was also for Jewel... but they called her Kaylee. They should have just had a Firefly memorial panel or something.
How does working on Stargate compare to your work on other Sci-Fi shows?
Jewel: This one doesn't get cancelled.

About the cd: that's what I was thinking... about the indie bands... I have friends who made a cd here in Brazil, and I've heard it's a LOT more expensive to do it here than on the US. It's a micro blog. You update what you are doing or a random thought or whatever, you you only get 140 characters to do it with. (So no rambling!) And you can "follow" other peoples twitter blogs as they follow you, and you see what they are up to as they post. It's silly and yet kind of addcitive.

The downside is that the service suffers from performance problems and occasional meltdowns. Twitter became very popular very quickly. As well, its creators didn't anticipate that there would be these celebrity twitterers with tens of thousands of followers each. This has resulted in scaling issues that aren't easily solved.

If they do sell it as MP3s here's hoping they, err, sell it as MP3s (no DRM on MP3s so we can all play it anywhere ;).
Not a physical CD doesn't bother me - Joss could do one of his mighty posts on here with the equivalent of liner notes and i'd be just as happy - cos I normally buy a CD, read the notes, rip it to hard-drive and then stick it in a box, never to be seen again BUT not iTunes would be very handy because I don't use it (i'd make an exception though, as I will if/when Dr H sells internationally).
And I get where Simon's coming from, right now it's small but perfectly formed and any more might just smear that perfection out over a wider area rather than add anything. But that said, the way it ended is open to more stories IMO so it can be done, it just has to be done well. Kinda lucky it's Joss/Jed/Zack/Maurissa then, eh ;).

And yes, I get where Simon is coming from too. The way it is now, it's a perfect short movie/musical, with logical bookended events for the opening and closing. Still, if anyone can make more work, it's Joss and co. Also: we'd get more songs. Songs are fun.

I think it's a good idea if Joss & team get enough time to do it right.. With the first installment nobody knew they were doing it so they could do it at the proper pace. Now that they're living in a fishbowl we drooling fans will be clamoring for "more! faster!" In the long term the quality of what they deliver will determine the enduring value of the piece, so let's give them space to breath.

Someone kind of far away from the speakers and the screen posted some nice long vids.
Joss's introduction and the first few questions.
Nathan's elegant formulation of what is lost and gained in Act III, which may well serve as the starting point for future analyses, if he has his way.
This one begins as a discussion of Nathan's privates, then somehow turns risque.
About putting power in different hands.

Read here.
Ditto the eonline account of the panel. No mention of a sequel. Ooooo-kay. Are these outlets existing in a Bizarro World? Or are we?

Let Down, maybe your computer is tired of being asked questions and that's why it's not allowing q&a? OK, that was lame, apologies. (Also entirely OT but why are you Let Down?)

The "wet sloppy kiss" refers to the question DeannaB referenced above: "Would Joss ever consider approaching Russell T Davis with an idea for a musical episode of Torchwood? He'd like to approach RTD anyway, he's doing fine without him. Grumble, stealing my James, grumble."
Joss was just making a crack about the notion of approaching RTD with a Jossian idea - RTD, who doesn't need Jossy-ideas, 'cause he's doing just fine without Joss (was the implication) so instead, Joss would just give him a wet-sloppy etc.
I can't brain very well, 'cause tired, but hope that is answerfyin' enough...

Funny, this was exactly what my son said he would not want to see happen.
I am actually pretty surprised so many people are saying they do not want to see more. Many people called this an origin story. What is the point of an origin story if there is no continuing story of the character it originated?
From the first moment I saw it I felt like it was the great first act of a broadway musical and the end was time for the intermission. I just did not want the intermission to be of infinite length. ;-)
newcj | July 26, 16:03 CET
Personally I don't think you could fill in between the acts because absolutely everything we saw would be coloured by the utter desolation of "... a thing" that we knew was coming. Course, a brilliant writing team could probably somehow play off that. Anybody know one ? ;-)

But then again, I was one of the people who didn't (and still doesn't) get your original complaint of it not being finished, so there is that :).

I'm in the camp that was fine with it being a one-off only, because that ending was like a definitive iron door slamming shut. His fate was sealed and the audience left to imagine that fate. However, someone above mentioned a prequel and that's something I can get behind. I have a feeling it would be put together/written a lot better than a famous movie prequel trilogy (of course, they used Episode rather than Act but apples/oranges).
ETA - if Joss & Co. do a sequel, then cool. I don't want the power of that ending diminished somehow though, that's my concern.

I don't feel the need for a sequel--I think I'd love to see some completely different stories (also starring NPH!). However, I have utmost confidence that Joss & Co. will pull it off in a way that makes me say, "Oh, of course they had to do that!"

Besides the fact that I disagree...well...totally, how do you know what the whole point of Dr. Horrible is? It seems like there have been quite a few differing opinions on that.
Sure, Dr. Horrible is now a recognized, card carrying super-villain, (The ELoE must have cards, right?) but his face at the end does not look like a man reveling in his life of villainy. Now he has dug the hole, does he try to climb out, does he dig it deeper or do something else entirely? Numbness wears off after a while and you are left with yourself in the new situation that you have made, was made for you, or happened while you were being numb and were not paying attention.
Since the story is about him, we are not talking about a 1 dimensional character there solely to mess up the world so the hero can save the day. He is the one with the layers and the conflicts. Peter Parker became a super hero, is that the end of what made his story interesting? Dr. Horrible could be a really interesting character and I would love to see him developed further. Sure, if he was being handed over to another team to develop, I'd say no thank you, but this group has a pretty good track record of going for the complex and interesting in characters. (At least Joss does, and I expect the others will develop one...a track record, I mean.)
newcj | July 26, 17:10 CET
I understand the "don't mess with perfection" issue, but if Joss and the team want to take the story of Billy/Horrible further, I cannot wait to see what they come up with.
phlebotinin | July 26, 17:31 CET
Sure, more is not, sometimes, better... but in this case, I'd happily take the risk.
maxsummers | July 26, 17:34 CET
newcj, I'm not claiming to know what the whole point of Dr. Horrible is, I'm putting forward what I think the whole point of Dr. Horrible is. Because you asked - even if that was semi-rhetorically:
This is what I was disagreeing with (not with the question if there could be a continuation). I think that thematically, and storywise, there's no denying the fact
