Wanted, Dead or Alive: The Portland Mercury writes up the CSTS event.
A feature article about the tragedy of Firefly, how Serenity came about, CSTS, and the dedication of Browncoats.
The article has some quotes from Scott Allie, who will be at the Portland event, as well as some Portland Browncoats including a mention of our own b!xy. :)

I love it, "No, my country/state/city is greyer and more miserable than yours", you lot rule ;).
Of course, all this talk of how much rain clearly shows your amateur status. As any Scot could tell you, it's not how much, it's what kind of rain. Is it the wet kind or the dry kind (and if you're shaking your head in puzzlement then you don't know rain ;) ? Straight down, mostly straight down, horizontal or actually falling up yer kilt ? Dreich, powtery, greetie, a dreep, a driffle, a smirr or lauchin' - it's like Eskimos and snow ;-).
Was that article actually printed in the paper ? I doubt we'd see "clusterfuck" appear in a paper over here (maybe as a direct quote) so kudos, sort of (it didn't add much by being there IMO and that's speaking as a fan of swearing BTW ;). Positive, which is nice but I guess accurate too would be nicer still.
Re: the DVD myth, it actually is quite a commonly held view among fans too which is a double edged sword I reckon. On one hand, people feel like they made a difference (and so can again), on the other hand, people feel like they made a difference (and so can again) - by which facetiousness I mean, pointless, quixotic campaigns maybe grab hold easier among those that believe the story. And when will it die ? Never of course - legends don't do they ? ;)

Nice article, even with the DVD>movie mistake. I like Scott's "They don't freak me out because they don't do anything real weird, the way some fanbases do" but maybe that means we're not letting our true weirdness out?
Simon, we lived in Clifden during the '70s and if you guys got a sunny day, it was because the all rain had already fallen in Connemara.

Could someone Please tell me if there will be any showings of Serenity in the NYC area? I have looked everywhere :(

Seems ironic to me considering the way I've seen him treated while lurking elsewhere.
Yeah, I can only assume I have his address wrong (or that the USPS is fussy about delivering livestock).
Spikeslady - you already asked that. Might want to also ask on .org. If anyone knows they will tell you. Please discontinue the spamming.
Saje - Livestock-gram.com is probably still unregistered...

Yeah, quite. If you tot them up, there're actually a few words for "snow" in English (sleet, spindrift etc.) and that's all the Eskimos have done (same as us and rain ;).
And just the idea of "Eskimo" as a language is wrong too of course.

Yeah but i'd feel bad taking the .com when i'm more of a keen hobbyist.

BandOfBuggered, I just moved to Portland from Tampa (well, actually St. Pete), and although it does rain more often here, it doesn't really bother me much because it's a different kind of rain - usually more of a light sprinkle, whereas in TPA, you'd get a deluge. And I'm also really loving having some bloody seasons, as well.
theonetruebix, did the Mission actually get a C&D letter and then stop the screenings? You'd think that the suits would figure out that the public episode screenings were a great way to convert people to the Buffy faith ("Hey, I'll buy you a beer if you'll come with me to this public viewing of this show that you've never really given a chance...") which would result in more DVD sales.
But what do I know? I only wear a suit on weekends when I'm hanging about the house.
Zeitgiest, keep in mind that Dark Horse also publishes Star Wars comics. Compared to those fans, we Browncoats are extremely normal and temperate individuals.

Gee, I thought Victoria got a lot of rain, and we only get 26.2 inches, about half of what Vancouver or New York get. Of course it all falls in about three or four dreary months.
I'm not sure there are enough Browncoats in this little city to have an annual Serenity screening, but it would be fun to go to one. Vancouver always seems a little too far away to go see a movie.

I believe they stopped on their own once word first broke about the licensing for such things being suspended.

bigsofty, we have people coming to the Vancovuer screening from Nanaimo, Mercer Island, Washington State, and Edmonton this year. It's an all-day event, from 11 am to 6 pm, so come on and join us. Check out our blog for some of the latest Silent Auction items, signed by Jewel Staite.
Liked it.

And I agree cabri, I get Portland-envy too. That's what I get for being stuck in the armpit of the nation, Wyoming.

onthedrift, I like the metaphoriness! Yup, it's like this huge myth that the outside world hears, and we're all here on the black chuckling and smacking our foreheads. Meanwhile, the rest of the world will learn of and fear our power. Mua hahaha.
Or maybe people just won't let it die because it's a story of the little guy, the consumer, being able to have their voice heard by the big guys and triumph. People love those stories.
BandofBuggered | June 19, 10:07 CET
I like the metaphor too, but I don't like the untruthiness - seems to me that stories that aren't true deceive both the teller and the listener.

It's not. But it can be countered with "Joss' fans couldn't stop the movie from being a box office failure".
Simon | June 19, 10:24 CET
LOL! I'll not beat up the author like he fears we may do. I have to admit that the rough journey the 'Verse has taken does add to it's charm a good bit. Heck it's not unlike the characters in the show itself.
Loved the article.

And Nancy, the rain IS totally exaggerated. And balanced by the fact that there's so much cool stuff to do when it IS raining. F'r example, frakking MOTHRA is showing this weekend too. On a big screen! I may never stop squeeing.
Now, can any long time Portlanders tell me this: where's the place that's supposta show the Buffy episodes every week? Wha hoppa? And if they stopped, what can we do to get them to start again?
mr_shemp | June 19, 10:34 CET
OTOH, I now live in Arizona where we have fun monsoons. That can flood the streets and ruin cars and drench your shoes, accessories and clothes, including your suede purse.
It's not. But it can be countered with "Joss' fans couldn't stop the movie from being a box office failure".
Simon, it's all just part of the ruse. We're waiting for that perfect time, when Joss activates us through the subliminal messages in his shows, to make everything right and Whedon-y. I don't know how. I just know.
SNT, for some reason the untruthiness of this myth doesn't bug me too much, though I'm big on the straightforwardness. I think it's because we are not the ones who are spreading the rumor. Then again, I've ceased efforts to quash it, as most people just roll their eyes.

And also why we moved. I have always liked Portland the few times I have visited. I would love to be there now.
As for us going away and interest dying down, why would anyone do that when it's possible to stick around, have some fun and do some good at the same time? Geesh. I wonder if it would be possible to get a showing going here for next year? Hm...

Is it grayer there? I've always been told it's actually rainier in Portland than in Seattle, but I've never heard anyone compare the gray.
theonetruebix | June 19, 11:32 CET
You've never stood on Castlerock beach and looked at the Atlantic Ocean on an early January morning. Now that's gray. Also not a good tourist selling point for Northern Ireland either.
