NPR has another story on our favorite Slayer and Buffy Studies. NPR.org's most viewed story from 5/19/08 was the piece on Buffy and Jamie Tarabay, the Iraq War correspondent. This morning, Steve Inskeep talks about Buffy Studies on Morning Edition.

I'll tell you what you can do in 27 seconds... you can stupidly refer to Buffy as a "cancelled show" because you're Steve Inskeep and you can't be bothered to do the ten seconds of homework required to learn under what circumstances the show actually ended.

"Cancelled." Piffle.

How about, "the show that ended, rather triumphantly, on its own terms"?

Think Dick Van Dyke, M*A*S*H, Mary Tyler Moore, Star Trek TNG, et. al.

Buffy was NOT cancelled. Many great shows were, but Buffy is not of their number. It's ridiculous that Inskeep got it wrong.

Yah, this bit actually felt wierdly cut short. And sadly undid in 27 seconds much of what Jamie Tarabay did to explain Buffy's appeal. Besides, saying Buffy was cancelled is like saying MASH was cancelled. There's cancelled, and there's going out in style!

On the upside, I pitched a Buffy and Literary Theory class to one of my deans and he liked it. So I'll be teaching it next spring, I'm really looking forward to it.

The "cancelled" part didn't bug me half as much as the tone of "Oh, isn't this cute?" - then again, you get a lot of that on NPR these days. Tarabay's piece, on the other hand, I liked a lot.

Haven't had a chance to listen yet, (it must have aired while I was in the shower), but I can say there are a lot of NPR listeners who find Steve Inskeep particularly irritating.

So how come all my friends and relations who both listen to NPR and know that I'm a Buffy fanatic haven't emailed me to say they heard the awesome story Jamie Tarabay did about Buffy the Vampire Slayer and now they understand why I'm so into it?

Being charitable, I would say that "canceled," though inaccurate, is the quickest way to say that it is no longer on the air in a 27 second piece. However, I agree that the tone with which the piece, and that particular line, were delivered does not make me feel particularly charitable...and I am a big NPR fan.
