Geek - Stories of People Taking Things Too Seriously.
Call for submissions: artists, writers, everyone... what are you a geek about?
If you're a geek and a webhead you'll probably know Fray.com, the collaborative storytelling site that's been around since the dawn of the web. If you don't... go check it out, it's a great place to read personal stories.
After a period of quiet while its founder, Derek Powazek, pursued other interests, Fray relaunched a couple of months ago and is now... a printed book.
Fray is still collaborative. Every issue of the book has its own theme. The next issue will be about geeks, you know... people like us who care perhaps just a little bit too much. Like Derek says: "So much that people around you don't understand."
Fray.com wants to publish your 'geek' story and they're looking for:
1. Artists. Any visual art (drawing, painting,
photography) on the theme. What does geek look like? Submit and vote at Pixish.
2. Writers. True personal stories, interviews with notable geeks, and articles on the theme. ~600 words. To submit, email geek@fray.com.
3. Everyone! Do the storytelling survey, asking for true stories from real people. Spare a minute to share yours?
Take the Geek survey!
"Submissions close in April. All submissions remain the property of their creators. If your work is chosen for the book, you still own it, we just ask for the right to publish it in the book and online. We cannot pay you, but we will send you a bunch of copies of the book."
NB: Derek's a friend of mine and one of Whedonesque.com's early advisors and beta-testers.

What is the editorial policy regarding link deletion? The stated posting policy doesn't really make that clear:
"WHEDONesque is a community weblog discussing the work of TV maker Joss Whedon. Anyone can post a story or comment to this site, as long as it pertains to Joss Whedon's work."
Other than the name "Fray", I don't see any clear link to the Whedonverse. I guess I'm unclear on why this makes the cut and (as a recent example) the "Firefly is anti-feminist" LiveJournal post keeps getting deleted.
This is not intended to be disrespectful of Caroline or the site's faithful editorial staff, but as a sincere attempt to better understand the rationale behind content deletion policy.

Sounds fun!

(personally I could live with it staying - it's an interesting object lesson in viewing something with a blinkered perspective and an axe to grind from the outset - but it's entirely up to the mods)

How have I never heard of Fray (that is, the site, not the comic) before? I've been wired since 1995!

The long answer? We had a discussion here recently about geek vs nerd. It ties in with that. Plus we are all obviously geeky here and this is project by one of our own members. A project that'll allow us to spread the word of our geekdom. I think that's more interesting than the silly birthday threads that everybody's so fond of, to name but one example of fluff posts.
Also... we don't in general discuss site policy on the site. Drop us an e-mail if you have more questions.

Merriam-Webster Online says: Geek - probably from English dialect geek, geck fool, from Low German geck, from Middle Low German
Date: 1914
1 : a carnival performer often billed as a wild man whose act usually includes biting the head off a live chicken or snake
2 : a person often of an intellectual bent who is disliked
3 : an enthusiast or expert especially in a technological field or activity
While Wikipedia gives us:
A person who is interested in technology, especially computing and new media. Most geeks are adept with computers, and treat the term hacker as a term of respect, but not all are hackers themselves. (Willow fits here, methinks.)
A person who relates academic subjects to the real world outside of academic studies; for example, using multivariate calculus to determine how they should correctly optimize the dimensions of a pan to bake a cake.
A person who has chosen concentration rather than conformity; one who pursues skill (especially technical skill) and imagination, not mainstream social acceptance.
A person with a devotion to something in a way that places him or her outside the mainstream. This could be due to the intensity, depth, or subject of their interest.
So...I guess I'm "safe" from the geek label. Any of y'all feel it applies to you, well, wear it with pride.

I pity the fools.
I know I'm a Buffy geek. And I'm damn proud of it! Will I write for Fray? Probably not, as real life tends to interfere with all of my amusing pursuits outside of school.

ETA: And Herb! You have some great shots in your flickr gallery that would no doubt qualify...
