I've attended both previous Slayage conferences, and everyone I talked with said they were the best academic conferences they'd ever been to--friendly folk, interesting papers--too many interesting papers--and fannish fun, as well, though no costumes (well, hardly any).

Yes, it's in Arkansas, but don't let that put you off! Arkansas is a hidden treasure! Besides, you'll be too busy talking about Whedon-stuff to care about where you are (believe me--SC2 was in Barnesville, GA). But in case you do care, check out Arkadelphia.

Job permitting, I plan to be there (will be good to see you again, Haunt!), and still considering writing a Spike paper to present.

Arkadelphia is near two spots definitely worth visiting: Hot Springs, and old resort town, and the Diamond Mine state part near Murfreesboro. It's the only diamond mine in North America, and you can keep what you find!

Used to live in Arkadelphia. It'll be just fine, trust me. I have good friends who're HSU faculty and HSU is becoming a great enviroment for pop-culture/geeky studies. Mostly in comics, but it is quite a Whedon-fiendly place.

Arkadelphia is, however, in a dry county FYI. Whereas Hot Springs...is not.

I used to live in Hot Springs and Little Rock. Hot Springs has bath-house row and beautiful nature. Little Rock is surprisingly cosmopolitan. No, really.
