It's a nice gesture...but who wants a copy signed by the editor? Joss would be fantastic. Jeanty would be great. Maybe even if one of the Buffy actors autographed a couple...but the editor? Does this seem rather odd to anyone else?

I think many have not yet come to recognize a comic editor as important. Jane E talks about how Buffy inspired the cult of the writer. I think we have to be further educated about what Scott and others do but I have no doubt it is crucial to a good comic.

I'm sure Scott Allie is a huge part of the quality of the product, but the producer is still a curious choice for an autograph. I mean, who dreams of a copy of Pulp Fiction autographed by the Weinstein brothers?

Well, NimNams the Weinstein comparison doesn't quite parallel this as the Weinsteins were vanity exec producers on a lot of stuff, but not actually day to day producers. Who wants Lawrence Bender's signature on a copy of Pulp Fiction is probably the more correct analogy, though to be fair most people probably wouldn't care if it weren't Tarantino's or Avery's scribbles on said box. So your point really still stands and I was being nitpicky. Plus I'm tired and in the wrong time zone :)

I'll just throw out there that I would be happy to have Scott Allie's autograph on something, however, as I've admired much of the work he's done (and it is work and there is a lot of it). The thing is people just don't understand all of the work that is done by editors. Depending on the book they could be co-plotting, coordinating schedules of the talent to make sure everything lines up, contributing materially to re-writes (don't tell Joss I said that!), approving scripts and artwork, lining up cover artists, promoting books through interviews and appearances, lobbying specific creators to work on a book they have opening up, and on and on and on... They do a LOT is really my point and what they do for your comics has more effect on the finished product in your hands than just about anyone.

Editors do a ton, yessir. They're kind of the unsung heroes of a comic book, as they have to orchestrate/placate/organize much of the production.

Nope. I've contributed news and info there from time to time, but I have no administrative powers or authority.

I'm also not connected to the contest at all, although I did compete in it once (it wasn't pretty...let's just say my ability to recall trivial minutia was less than spectacular).

Wowzers, I would have hoped we could have mustered a little more... graciousness than that...

I would be honored to have a comic signed by Scott Allie, who's played such a large part in getting us our much-enjoyed Whedon-fixes... and me wantses a "Long Way Home" poster something fierce, my precioussss - but my trivia memory skills are erratic at best, and getting erratic-er as time goes by...

Me. His work on the issues (that I get some sense of from the letter column and interviews) is enough to warrant that, but his responses to some of the nastier fan mail have also won my appreciation.

I can speak from personal experience to the fact that Scott Allie is not only an incredible editor who doesfar more work and is responsible for so much more of the quantity and quality stories coming out of Dark Horse Comics, but he's also a hell of a nice guy. I'd be proud to have his signature... that is if I cared about having signed items, which I generally don't.

Comics editors don't get half the credit (OR blame) that they deserve.

Editors are a big part of these things and I think Scott Allie and Chris Ryall are a big part of these series and why we are even getting more canon stories for both Buffy and Angel.

I don't want to sound like I'm going overboard here but there are very few instances where I am disappointed in our fandom.

One of the guys that is directly responsible for Joss Whedon's return to Buffy is making an effort to share his love of Dark Horse's best selling book by offering a contest to win some free signed stuff. And people are complaining?

"You sad, sad, ungrateful traitors. Who do you think you are?"

When your name is on the credits page of a comic book, feel free to offer signed copies when ever and where ever you want. Until then (and after then) don't complain about a creator wanting to share his love for his craft.

I work beside people that sometimes deal with print production and if the editors have anything to do with that, they deserve major plaudits - it's a frikkin' nightmare of to-ing and fro-ing, narrow margins and missed deadlines.

(and I don't know about Scott Allie - not read any of his stuff - but Chris Ryall is also a pretty handy writer too, did a very decent job on IDW's 'The Great and Secret Show' adaptation IMO)

Joss would be almost impossible. I've talked with Georges about the contests. He even commentd about how cool the idea was on the Myspace page.

Thank you for that comment alexreiger! And btw guys, believe it or not, when Scott was asked about donating signed comics, his first response was something along the lines of "I don't exactly have Jo and Georges signed comics lying around." I don't think he's used to people recognizing his importance.

Also, there is still a good chance of winning one of the posters even if you are not good at trivia. Trust me, I've seen it.

P.S. Is there any chance of this article being removed because of my commenting here?
