The original is a Takashi Miike movie (director of Ichi the Killer and Audition and the controversial Masters of Horror episode Imprint). It has its moments for sure and it went about things in a way that most movies wouldn't dare. I don't see it having much crossover appeal though and I must admit its easily the least in quality of the things I've seen by him.
