(SPOILER) Scenes from the Southland. The fine folks at TwitchFilm.net whet our appetites with some glimpses from SMG's Southland Tales, (theoretically coming to a theatre near you Nov. 9th.) Warning : potty-mouths abound. (Thanks to Quint at AICN for the original tip.)

yay! I'm so excited that this is finally coming out. even if it's a huge mess, which seems quite possible, if not downright likely.

This movie looks strange enough to be a guilty pleasure for some. SMG should really be a hoot as a porn star who's trying to be Miss Cleo, Bill O' Reilly and Oprah all at once. Her talk show scene is really unbelievable.

I'll admit, I've been curious about this movie for quite a while. It's great to finally see some clips. Thanks for the link!

From what there is, the movie looks intriguing enough. It does feel a bit like it's trying to be a modern Beckett play, though. Still, the Rock looks hilarious.

Rumor has it that the trailer could be in theaters this Friday. It should be available online soon, too.

I just watched the clip where The Rock gives his movie pitch (clip #3), and I'm not sure what to make of it. Sarah Michelle Gellar's lines are hilarious, and she delivers them perfectly, and it reminded me how funny that girl is.

But the pacing of it is so weird that it doesn't come off as funny. Neither do Sean William Scott's lines, another crazy brilliant comedic actor, or the reaction shots of Will Sasso, yet another brilliant comedian. Even though the actors are all in the same room and sitting to close to each other, almost every line is shot with the camera on the actor alone. Everything in the scene just falls flat. It's like all the energy is being sucked into a vortex somewhere off screen. It's not the actors, it's the way it's shot and cut.

I hope the pacing of the rest of the movie isn't like that-- it feels like it's been cut up and glued back together with the pieces all fitting right, from a technical perspective, but with zero spark in it.

Clip #2 manages to be funny without falling on its face, which is good, and SMG is awesome in it. That's the one with the bad-wordiness, for squeamish people. "It makes me want to give up anal" is, I think, one of the funniest lines I've heard this summer.

Clip #1 gave me an error when I tried to download it.

I haven't seen any version of the film. But I've read the prequel graphic novels, which I recommend to get the backstory and the tone. The flat tone is part of the mostly not laugh-out-loud humor. I have no idea if this is a good movie. But I've been following its progress for years.

dispatch - I agree with what you say, but it could be a matter of the clip starting in the middle of a scene. The character's relationships to each other, spatial and otherwise, may have been established well enough earlier so this part of the scene will appear less disjointed when viewed in context.
