The Joss Whedon panel at Comic-Con.
It kicks off today at 4.45pm PST and lasts an hour. And here's the major announcements. Ripper optioned by the BBC, Joss has written a horror movie with Drew Goddard, he's working on a short ballet film with Summer Glau and more Fray to come plus Buffy season 9 as well.
If we don't get anybody posting about what Joss said, we'll just have a party instead.
Anyhow here's some of the topics expected to be covered.
Buffy Season 8
The Serenity Collector's Edition DVD
Sugarshock
Goners
Something Big (well we can hope anyhow).
BrewBunny | July 29, 02:45 CET
Will they be showing this on G4? It won't help me here at work but perhaps they'll post a stream on their website later that I can see at home. Better than the usual murky jittery fan vids anyway.

Have laptop. 1999 era early G3 Powerbook, but hey, it works. Two batteries, still at 80% (used it for an hour or so this morning).. Good signal from the cell modem - four out of five bars.
Am set.
Huge hall only about half filled. That's disappointing.
About to start. Hang on.

Scott Allie (Dark Horse editor) introduces Joss. mentions S8 BtVS, Serenity, and Sugar Shock, which is free on darkhorse.com.
Dark Horse has become a huge part of Joss' life. Dark Horse stepped up and controlled auction and provided venue for last night's charity dinner for Equality Now. Thanks Scott Allie.
Sugar Shock - Joss wearing shirt w/ some of the art.
Also doing XMen and Runaways - in home stretch of both of those, but won't end with a whimper.

New Serenity Collector's Edition DVD includes River Tam Sessions. Joss has the DVD in hand, guves it a hug. August in stores.
What has Joss done for us lately? Well, he WROTE WW, but so much for that. Goners is biggest part of his life right now. Been getting studio notes about how the script can be better. And they're right.
Drew Goddard, tall and kind of sexy, and Joss has written a movie together. This will be secret, right? Called Cabin In the Woods, and it's the horror film to end horror films, literally.
Not set yet, but it looks like sometime next year, he'll finally get to film Ripper.

Joss is getting sick and tired of not entertaining us enough, so he wants to do things, like Ripper, that can be done quickly. Lots of creepy things in the back of his brain that he needs to get out.
Angel movie? It's called Bones, season 2. Is up for Big Damned Sequel. They made the Special Edition because people keep buying the DVDs.
Season 8 - When and if is Oz going to come back? Can't say when, but it's not a question of "if." Will happen.
Is getting to end of what wife calls his Marvel Merry Midlife Crisis.
Really wants to focus on filmed entertainment, but can't stop writing Buffy comic, almost like a drug. Not giving Brian Vaughn a huge amount of notes. After Brian, two one shots by Joss before Drew Goddard's issues.
deanna b | July 29, 04:12 CET

QuoterGal | July 29, 04:13 CET

Franchising is starting to interfere with storytelling. Should be earned, never sought. Universe happens so fast, builds off of the original idea.
Has he ever been approached to do Heroes? It's something he wants to do, but not something he has time to do. The problem is he can't do just a little bit of anything. He has so many things that he needs to say next year, that he just can't risk the time.
Asked to do Numfar's Dance of Shame. He loves us, but he's not going to dance. Audience claps rythmically. No, not going to dance for us, it makes him feel like a monkey.
How does he focus? Some days it's harder than others. He's also the father of two children now, and unlike every other child he's ever met, they're awesome. Wonder Woman was catyclisman. Doesn't have ADD or Narcolepsy. Has twelve clipboards on his walls with everything he wants to do. Have to keep deadlines and priorities, but follow the muse, and work on the project that's calling you right then.
Is working on a short ballet starring Summer Glau. Called "The Serving Girl." Writing music.
Is doing more with Fray. Not sure he was supposed to say that, but "yes."
deanna b | July 29, 04:30 CET
I'm pretty sure there is a loophole thanks to the "Thou shalt rock out" commandment, Saje. I'm not totally sure. Never read the Bible but I do intend to see the movie if it ever comes out.
Good job that I'm a total heathen and don't believe in any of that stuff. If I did I might be in some serious trouble, come Judgement Day. And Terminators freak me out.

Did he do Firefly because he watched Star Wars and thought "Wouldn't this be cool if Clint Eastwood was doing this?" Not before, but now that he's said it, yes.
Illyria was his favorite to write for. The whole process of watching Amy at the Shakespeare readings and realizing her potential, so knew the only way to let her use that was to kill her. Joss tried to sneak in and write all of her dialog. "World With Shrimp" speech fits to music of Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds, or My Favorite Things.
Directing Harry Potter film? Yeah, he probably could find a weekend for that.
Wonder Woman question makes him twitch. She was an Amazon, not a goddess, but definitely more than human. He liked it because it was kind of like Illyria.
JMS just did a direct to DVD Babylon 5 movie, and is thinking the same way a lot of us are. What he did was what a lot of creators are wanting to do.
Upfront, from the seventies, feminism in his works.
How did he get the idea for Illyria, and is there going to be an Angel movie from the comics. Well, David and Sarah have jobs now, and they've both said that they're wanting to move on. Illyria is like Lady Capulet. Regal creature.
Does Joss want to write more musicals? More than anyhing in his life, but it's the hardest thing. It's his dream and his plan, but has been deliberately keeping it at arms length for now.

Write some more Illyria, Joss! She was the best thing to come out of season 5 of Angel, and I absolutely loved that season to begin with. There needs to be more Illyria to enjoy.
In fact, combine that with your JMS comment and create a direct to DVD Illyria movie. I'll buy 5 right now.

Georges Jeanty is great, but it just takes a long time to do art, so weekly comic not feasible. And what happend at the end of 52?
Anyone he reguretted killing? Had secret plan to bring back Tara that never came to fruition. (In Season 7, he wanted to do episode where Buffy was given a wish. You used your wish on shoes? Of course not, and Tara standing there. Was going to be about three or four episodes in. But could not make it happen. So he made it about Willow moving on instead, and that's where Kennedy came from. Oh, so that's what being booed sounds like.

Pfft, you call this exhausted ... zzzzzzzzzz. 'K, yep. Happy too though, and that's only partly the beer talking (yes, we have talking beer over here ;).
Joss knows that all this information will be all over the forums and news sites before he even gets off the stage so he probably wouldn't hint at anything that wasn't going to happen. I'd say it was a safe bet.
Heh, well for me that would probably be an irresistible incentive to make stuff up. Hopefully Joss has been less mauled by the lion of evil ;).
(S9 would be great but since S8 is already slated to be about 5 - real-time - years long i'm not exactly holding my breath for a confirmed continuation - the other, shorter term stuff is just as exciting)

Pretty much what I was thinking. Maybe some of the less arc-essential ideas for Season 8 will be held over and used as part of Season 9 in order to make the current season a little shorter. It's a possibility.

I'm currently posting from the overflow line for the OMWF Singalong. The convention had put it in a 500-seat hall, and over 1500 showed up. So they opened another 500-seat hall (1AB), filled it, and scheduled encore showings in both halls. As the SDCC staff said, they had absolutely no clue that this would be that popular. Well, duh. So I'm waiting for the 11pm showing. Hopefully this tells them something. Grr.

Say hello to someone who got turned away. I was fighting with Room 20 all day. I waited on line to get into the first panel of the day there when it was empty. It wrapped around outside and when I got in seats were only available in the last few rows. I decided not to camp out at the next panel in Room 20 which would have ensured my seat for the panel after, Heroes. Apparently I was the only one. When I returned to that panel the line extended further outside then it had in the morning and I was easily shut out. So I had to formulate a strategy for later in the day for Joss. Do I attend the panel before, Futurama, to ensure my seat? In an effort to see as much as possible, I risked it. I figured I'd return early and check out the line situation.
I showed up 45 minutes prior to Joss panel. I looked in and it didn't look like Futurama had packed them in. Not everyone sticks around for the following panel and there was a competing panel for the Sarah Connor Chronicles. I took a place on line and say I was a good 3/4 closer than I was this morning. It was looking good. All of a sudden, they cut the line off literally at 5 people ahead of me. I was shocked how could they possibly anticipate who would go and who would stay from the previous panel a good 45 minutes before the next one started? The only thing I can think of is that they assumed everyone would stay and they counted empty seats and kept the same amount of people on line.
It was a pretty sad scene. The Joss panel was a big reason I decided to go Sat over the other days. Even still, I have seen him speak before, what was sad were the faces of the people in Jane hats and Buffy shirts. Clearly he was their main reason for attending Comic Con as well. My gut said stick around but they were adamant about clearing the area. Comic con shouldn't be about waiting in lines and camping out. They can easily set up flatscreens in areas to catch the overflow for the main event type panels.

The One True b!X | July 29, 12:37 CET
This was only my third Comic-con, but things definitely seemed off from the others. I suspect that they oversold, and tried to make up for it with this more aggressive crowd management. That may have "worked" in terms of the events, but it couldn't do anything about the crowding on the exhibitor floor. I meant to go back to the Browncoat table today and actually buy stuff. But after Friday I found that I didn't have the stomach for it. They may be outsmarting themselves. People could start to conclude that the con has gotten too big for the San Diego Convention Center, and for San Diego.
I was in the overflow room for the first showing of OMWF. Thrown together as it was, with a screen that was hard to see, it was still a lot of fun. The next time I hear about one of these at a real theater that I can get to, I won't hesitate. I wholly repent of my past sins of hesitation.
dreamlogic | July 29, 12:42 CET
Honestly, this was one of the single most annoying parts of the entire thing. And it's part and parcel of some of the tone and attitude that cropped up here and there: People think they somehow own Joss and his creativity. It was only one example of several that reared its head during this panel.

Obviously I wasn't there (being in the UK and all) so I'm not able to comment on this particular incident personally but I do know what you mean and it's something that bothers me a great deal about certain members of any fandom who step over the line of the relationship being offered to them. People like Joss, who are very open to their fans, seem to attract this type all the more.
Situations like the calling out for Joss to dance thing often start out in good fun but there comes a point where there needs to be the good sense to see that the person really doesn't want to do what is being asked. Forcing the issue beyond that, even in jest, can come across as rude and unnecessary, which seems to have been the case here, which is a shame.
Of course, no inappropriate fan that I'm aware of has gone so far as to start selling the body parts of another fan during a panel, as far as I know. That seems to be reserved for online blog communities. As it should be.

What were the other examples? I'm in the mood to massivley cringe at what fans ask of people.

There were a lot of long lead-ins to the questions - self-promotion, attempted creative directing of his future output, to the point of the comic book guy trying to get him to commit to weekly Buffy comics. I suspect that the kid who said Clint Eastwood in Star Wars was written by his stage dad - stuff like that. However, deanna b's transcripts conveyed the overall tone very well in that Joss handled it all. It was his show, and he's a hell of a performer.

So much to celebrate and speculate about.
deanna b, you're the best. I appreciate your efforts, like everyone else here!
More Fray... *licks lips*
And Ripper? *faints*
April | July 29, 17:40 CET
Therefore I fully expect to love Ripper! It's brought so much joy here, I'm excited by osmosis. heh.
I am intrigued by the DVD comment, even though like as not I shouldn't be. But I'm going to hold that little bit of hope close to my heart and revel in what we are getting. :)
Thanks to deanna b for the fine reporting!

Great stuff!
I dunno if gossi sleeping, samatwitch, but I just bought a few cabininthewoods domains. Just 'cause something'll come to me, and I'd rather have the domains already...

So no Serving Girl website love? ;-)
And does writing a ballet mean choreographing it? And can Summer even do ballet at a professional level anymore? I thought she'd been injured or something. Maybe ballet is the wrong term for what Joss is planning.
shambleau | July 29, 03:09 CET
Usually, writing a ballet means the story and/or the music. I have no information on whether SG has kept up with her dancing, though she certainly has stayed in shape. I did also read she was injured, but an injury that will keep you from dancing a two to three hour ballet every night while taking class and rehearsing for the next production, will not necessarily keep you from making a movie. "Ballet" can also be a fairly general term that means telling a story through dance and music. What steps are used is not written in stone.
Let me just add my original comment:
RIPPER!!!
Ok, not so original.
Since I have become a fan of Mr. Joss, I have so wished I liked horror movies, but I really, really don't. They make me feel all yucky inside. I really really hate that feeling. Now he and Drew Goddard are writing the horror movie to end all horror movies? Damn. I was worried that Goners would be to horror-ific for me to be able to deal with. (Did I say Damn?) [little voice] Didn't he say anything about the western NF was talking about the other day? [/little voice]
I really like his t-shirt.
Hope you feel better soon Caroline.

I also feel for those of you who stood on line for hours only to be turned away from a room that wasn't full.
Thanks, Deanna, for the awesome reports!

I remember, like a comedy routine, a voice like a female God above, monitoring everything, telling people not to run (and pointing people out specifically), there was plenty of room, everyone would get a seat, so it was obviously set up that this person could see how many people were coming into this huge space. I opted not to go this year, mainly for financial reasons and my heart would have broken if I had planned to see Joss and then didn't (and the Exhibitor's room was Hell on earth - sounds like nothing has changed).
Tonya J | July 29, 19:39 CET
@ Gossi: You forgot to add he needs to bring you fresh baked cookies. ;)
@ Tonya J: No, you're not wrong...but your statement made me think of what it would be like to see Joss work with Bruce Campbell. *sigh*

He did mention Serenity: Better Days! And it is out later this year!

Bruce Campbell was the first thing that came to my mind when I saw that comparison. Hmmmm, I wonder if Bruce is errr, mature enough to play Nathan F's dad? That would be too funny for words.

I think someone may have inferred that "Ripper" takes place pre-"Buffy" because Ripper was a previous persona of Giles. Also, if "Ripper" takes place post-"Buffy," it seems to my admittedly befuddled mind that it might conflict with what Giles is supposed to be doing during S8. I guess it could take place during "Buffy" S6, while Giles is in England, or between S6 and S7 ... ? Or it could just be the Giles character at an unspecified time, with Watcher duties going unmentioned ... Anyway, much with the happy here, and gratefulness to you for your report.
Was it mentioned (or hinted) where the Summer Glau ballet might be performed -- live or on camera?
Caroline, hope you feel better soon.

I have an angry letter to write about the way the con was managed and oversold. They should have had event tickets for those big panels. I was going to leave if I didn't get in to the BSG panel, chalking up the $$ and hours spent driving down as a total loss. Hearing now that they still didn't let everyone in from that line is just ...mind-boggling. A lot of people were waiting for four hours (!!!!) and as a result, missing out on going to other areas of the con.
BUT -- Joss's panel was definitely the silver lining in all that hassle. Between seeing him, seeing the BSG panel and then Mark Verheiden's panel, I had a great afternoon and evening.

I am beyond happy. This - all of it, but particularly Ripper-oh-my-god-Ripper - is the best news ever. deannab, thanks so much for the great accounting(s). You're awesome.

So, I'm sort of hoping that as part of getting ASH on board, they agree to film locally, seeing as I'm about a mile from ASH's house, (and also Jonny Depp's new house) and I might get a chance to catch the filming.
So, so cool.

Since I don't have much to add [but I will Woo Hoo to the kick ass news from Joss in so many flavors! and THANKS to deanna b], I will say to Bruce Campbell fans that he is now in a supporting role on the new summer series "Burn Notice" on USA Network in the U.S. I tuned in because of Bruce, and I am glad I did because while Bruce appears only in small doses, it is a really good show IMO.

It does suck that people who wanted to get in couldn't, but it's a harsh Comic Con lesson we all learn at some point. You just gotta pack a bag for the day and plan on not seeing sunlight.
I didn't get into the Buffy sing-a-long, but thankfully the Warren Ellis panel was going on at the same time, so it wasn't a waste of time. I can see why Joss likes him.
