Serenity (2005). The directorial debut of pop genius Joss Whedon ("Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Angel"), this big-screen adaptation of his "Firefly" series is the best space opera since the first two Star Wars movies and one of the most criminally neglected entertainments of the last decade. Had it been cursed with a gluttonous budget, a raft of "stars," and the requisite McDonalds tie-ins, it would have made a quarter-billion dollars. Instead, it made about a tenth as much--but is a much better movie for it.

The author's bang on too IMO. Quality wise 'Serenity' kicked the arse of, fr'instance Pirates 2 (and I loved the first one) and yet the box-office just doesn't compare. "Nowt as queer as folk" as they say.

Amen, I couldn't say it any better. The author bought up some good points. What Joss did with a mere $40 million budget is simply amazing. Instead of wasting minutes on 'G-wiz' special effects, he stuck to scenes related to the story and he did it well. And yes, I suspect the lack of big named stars in the movie did hurt it at the box office as well as no huge 'sight-in-mind' corporations shoving images of "Serenity" into people's minds.
You know, I wouldn't have it any other way. Joss lives in the art of storytelling and we've been blessed to follow the tale.

Don't forget www.bugmenot.com - can be handy. Took three tries to get in to the New republic, but Bug Me Not came through. In this case, Pointy excerpted all the Serenity goodness. (Thanks, Pointy)

But, more happily: very nice - and deserved - praise for the film, from a prestigious, and non-industry or genre, publication. Shiny!

We'd all be eagerly awaiting Empire Strikes Back next year and Serenity would be forgotten. Ooh, controversial :-)
See, Star Wars changed Hollywood and filmmaking. End of story. Serenity merely changed the ending of the Firefly story.

Sadly, I think that the author's math is spot-on, assuming that he's referring to domestic take.
Yep, very true (my comment was directed at Nebula1400's - since edited - post above mine which was originally about the author's maths ;).
And I think if 'Serenity' had been released in 1977 it would have changed cinema history, simply because no-one, and I mean no-one would have seen special effects like that before. They're good (if relatively easily and cheaply attainable) by today's standards but by 1977's they'd have been spectacular, amazing and sensational ;).
(much as Star Wars' were - is anyone who saw it at the cinema, especially fairly young, ever going to forget that first post-crawl shot of the star destroyer ? Thinking not)
