Whedonesque Mobile : Comments on 11513 : Those Joss Whedon Serenity sequel comments.

I just saw a link to the Dark Horizons one over on the SideshowFreaks Whedonville section. It's amazing how fast this stuff gets spread around the internet. And it's also amazing how these sites reporting this news manage to leave out the fact that Joss was just debunking a rumor so we didn't get our hopes up.

Ohhhh geez, saw two of those sites linked to serenitymovie.org.

And in terms of never being a sequel... it is amazing how some people will read a statement and interpret it from their perspective, and rub it into the fan's faces(obviously not all the links above). Do these people know how to read a text? Did they fail English in high school? Anyways, I ain't giving up. There is no sequel no, but that doesn't mean there will never be one, and I will hold onto that hope.

ETA: I just read the above text and realize that I may be doing the same thing, but in my mind, unless Joss the Boss says there will NEVER be a sequel, I ain't giving up.

When you put it like that, it is quite alarming to think that there will NEVER be a Serenity Sequel on the screen (big or small). It looks like TPTB are proclaiming the end of the world or some such nonsense. It seems so final "Joss Whedon Confirms Serenity Sequel is a No Go" or worse " Serenity is Dead Forever".
Wasn't it said by someone that he would rather make something that a few people need to watch rather than something a whole lot want to watch? What if Serenity and all that for which it stands is something that more people need to see? Y'know because of the way the team works together to make a family. A group of individuals who are alone in the 'verse come together not only to just get by but to be a part of something special, and hijinks ensue!

There is so much story left to tell. But, unless there is a miracle and somebody with "means" can back the project, it does seem rather unlikely that there will be another Serenity story on the screen.

Well I keep on sayin, but dunno if people agree with me or not, after Wonder Woman and Goners, if Joss Whedon as a name gets more well known, and those two films do well(the premises are simpler and not as wacky as cowboy sci fi), then I am sure Universal will be putting in money to finance a sequel. Also as his name gets bigger(and his head), more people will be checking out his other works I am sure(buffy,angel, firefly, serenity etc), and so sales of the Serenity DVD will be higher and there will be more people checking it out. At least I hope thats the case.

Seriously though, I'd like to make a comment here; The Serenity sequel fang has become a nightmare. Whenever Joss says anything resembling a word about it, a load of web blogs pick it up now as "Browncoats are crap! Whedon to invade England!", or other such stories.

Simon, thanks for the post. It was irritating that one site took Joss' comments and added the word "never" to his quote. Posting it as a rather mean-spirited fox-newsie kind of article. It was amusing, however, to see all the other sites pick up on the same article as news instead of gossip or conjecture.

I, for one, would be surprised if there wasn't a live-action continuation of the 'verse. I've added three converts in the last two months, the next comic is coming out, dvd sales/rentals remain high.

I'm so torn. A sequel would be awesome, but there's only 7 of the crew left and I'd hate to see any more of them die.

All I can think to say at the moment is "Poor Joss." Imagine how it must be to try to squelch one rumor and end up innocently beginning another. Damned if he does, damned if he doesn't situation. I hope he doesn't stop posting here as a result -- although, were I in the same situation, I would certainly think twice about it.

Somehow I dropped that thread in the middle, so not I only did I miss the rumor-squelching by the great and most awesome, purple one, but I missed the equally important announcement that it was Saje's birthday. Happy belated birthday, Saje. I'd bake you a cake but y'know, getting it there and everything might be a stretch, unless you have a small transporter tucked away somewhere.

So, when squelching rumors, does it get all icky between your toes? Maybe that's why his purpleness suggested using pillows.

See The Signal episode 18 for my article "The Case For A Sequel." It addresses this concern (though not Joss's comments this week specifically).

I very clearly address the many questions that fans have had about the sequel, one by one. Including when Joss saying "there is no sequel (yet)" is misinterpereted to mean "there will never be a nother sequel. ever."

I wrote the article because there was a lot of this type of talk going on at Dragon*Con, and it's simply not true.

The article was designed to respond to these types of stories and rumors.

Well it seemed a bit silly that Whedonesque was the only place where Joss' Whedonesque remarks and the subsequent fallout weren't being discussed.

His remarks were taken out of context and when Joss' quote surfaced in various in-boxes, the "too good to be true" syndrome kicked in and several sites thought that the Serenity franchise is dead, period. And I detect the distinct odour of "let's kick a man when he's down" in some of the write-ups. But that's the writers' problem and not ours and not worthy of discussion here.

Hopefully in some small way, this will help address the balance.

Cheers barboo ;). The transporter's still in the experimental stages. Last time we tried a cake it came out the right way up which would have been fine only it was an upside down cake *ba-dum-dum*. Ahem. Oh dear.

Just the rumour I think Hoban Washburne. The one about Joss being seen walking onto the set of 'Serenity 2' with Elvis is fine though, spread away (the set's on the moon, BTW, just next to the B52 bomber, behind the London bus).

Is it just me or is there almost wilful stupidity in reading "There's no sequel, no secret project regarding Serenity or somesuch" as "There will never ever be a sequal under any circumstances. Honestly, you could hold a gun to my head and wave $100 million no-strings-attached dollars under my nose. Never gonna happen" ?

Until it's categorically stated otherwise there's still hope, IMO, failing that there's cool new Joss/verse stuff to look forward to and failing that there's the weekend ;).

Well, let's not be coy - from a business point of view, there is no real case for a sequel, hence why one hasn't happened. And the chance of that changing any time soon is unknown, but I'd presume not very likely at all.

Although, if one appeared, I'd be all over it like rusty thrush.

I went to a few of those links posted above and one of them said that Serenity flopped on DVD as well. Is that true? I thought it did really well on DVD or am I thinking of Firefly?

Uhm, no it wasn't. Really, from a numbers point of view, it absolutely wasn't at all. Ultraviolet, anybody?

They also claim the DVD was a flop. How do they know that? DVD numbers aren't available.

It's also funny seeing how these articles have developed. One site has taken Joss' post from Alexis flat and published it, and then others have copied the other articles and added negative spin, and others have taken Joss' post and added words to it.

Also, I'd like to exclusively announce me and Joss are invading Spain. With kittens. Hungry, angry kittens.

The key word to end your confusion is: yet. There is no sequel yet. But the door is open for a sequel in the future.

Serenity *did* do *very* well on DVD. Firefly did, too. We just don't know how well because the movie studio does not release those numbers. But both stayed in Amazon.com top 100 DVDs for more than a year.

The linked sites are not beacons of objective journalism by any stretch of the imagination. I'm actually curious to know the kind of traffic those sites actually get.

And, hey, IMDB hasn't posted the story yet! Maybe they've learned their lesson from the Kate B. Wonder Woman April Fools Debacle.

Serenity made back its production money, therefore it wasn't a flop. Not a galloping success, either, but there is a middle ground. That makes for such boring "news" articles, though.

I'm operating under the assumption that while a sequel can happen it is very unlikley given the current state of things. Lots of things can change overnight, and I really hope that we get more Firefly someday, I'm just not holding my breath for it to happen anytime soon, if at all.

I do think this is the key for any future Joss on the screen - big or small. The success of WW and (hopefully) Goners - if it happens - may make studios rethink his prior work. Honestly, even if Serenity never happens again, I'd be happy to see anything on screen by Joss (except reruns of Alien Resurrection).

The bit people are really missing here is the original context. And that's entirely my fault. *I* was talking about the prospect of a sequel in that topic. Joss posted to say 'Uhm, no'. I watered down the original post to confuse people less, but in retrospect probably confused people more.

I can think of several sorts of scenarios and plot lines that could be explored even if it didn't get done for 5 to 10 years into the future. Though Joss seems to like to be self-deprecating about his personal qualities, I'd be willing to bet he'd get the cast back together. I'm not worried about it. I'm just glad I live in a universe where JW exists. It gives me a warm, glowing chocolatey-caramely good feeling in my stomach (not in my heart because that would clog up my ventricles).

Simon, Thanks for this thread. ...and thanks Joss for your original post trying to keep us from getting too excited about something that was not in the works.

It turns out that Joss did his posty thing right after I headed out for the weekend, and though I always try to go back to threads, I totally missed that one. (Are we ever going to get the "Recent Comments" feature back? I try not to be a pain, since I'm the only one who seems to be beating that drum, but it used to help me stay on top of posts those many times when I have to be away for a little while. I really miss it.)

Anyway, since I get almost all my Whedon news from this site, I missed this whole thing...until now. I have to wait to check out the links until tonight but from the posts here it sounds like a jouranlism teacher could use this as a very clear cut example of how not to report news. It is scary how many of those examples we see around here.

Gossi, C'mon. Don't you think the whole Spanish Armada tit for tat thing is pretty much over? I mean I know there are plenty of places in the world still fighting resurrected battles that old, but the Spanish didn't actually succeed and you guys ended up with quite an empire in spite of them, so what's the big? ...I know, I'm an American, we just don't get it. ;-)

newcj, I think a primary school teacher could use it as a very clear cut example of how not to comprehend the written word, the mistakes have really been made at that basic a level. How some of them can accurately quote Joss' post and still mis-report (or at least add a meaning to) the message is beyond me.

Indeed, the idea of random spin off Firefly shows (Firefly: The Young Ones) fills me with fear. Firefly is in the hearts of people because it was pretty much all of a great standard.

I'd never say never about another Serenity film. Because at the end of the day, none of us know what the future holds, and if somebody willing to take a risk like Mary Parent will pop up again. Like I said, if that happens I'll be first in line (with 4 other people with me, apparently).

Besides as I said before, one of the keys to getting a sequel is for Joss as a name and brand to be successful, in putting out movies. If he isn't a success with the other ventures Universal would not want to pony up cash for sequel, since Serenity was not exactly a cash cow.

Well, it shows that the internet is a double-edged sword. While it can be a source for new angles on old stories, it can also give rumours a much longer lifespan, maybe too long. I'm sure a Serenity sequel is on his very long to-do list, if he had one. It would be better if it was on Universal's to-do list.

Personally I agree with Harvey Chin; 'Star Trek' survived because the fans remained loyal to the show and the Rodenberry never lost interest. It is obviously premature to talk about the 'Serenity' story being over when we know for a fact that Joss is currently working on another set of comics telling stories from the 'verse.
Joss is a young man, we can expect him to create a lot of things over the next thirty odd years, and I am confident that I'll enjoy anything he comes up with.

I'm also a believer in the notion that if Wonder Woman and Goners do very well then Universal will invest in a Serenity sequel. They didnt really lose much money, if anything they just regained it. DVDs are still selling.

We'll have to wait years for a sequel. Fine. But I am DYING for something now on TV, something weekly, something involving actors and Joss's name slapped on to it!!

I feel bad that so many other sites are quoting each other instead of us. It was clear that Joss was talking about the present moment, as in, no secret project AT THIS TIME (I'm shouting so the other sites can hear it). I also feel bad and share any blame with gossi because I was also speculating about current activities that seemed to indicate something was afoot (yes, I'm sure I said "afoot"), and Joss was just trying to say, nothing afoot right now, I'm just doin' stuff with my friends because I'm so, yeah, awesome (yes, I'm sure he said "I'm so, yeah, awesome").

I definitely agree with everyone that journalism teachers must be having !kittens! (and not the good kind) to see how a statement of "here is what is not happening now" has been converted to "Serenity has a turnipy odor forever," and how all these sites are happily reporting "never, ever made back its budget, even with DVD sales" when (a) I think it was figured out here (can't find the link) that Serenity just about made back the budget, based on estimates of the movie box office (which was about $39 million gross) and DVD up till that point (b) we don't know exact DVD figures, but in no way does "flop" apply and (c) interest continues to grow, as seen by larger numbers at cons all the time, like the last Dragon*Con. I am definitely going to talk to my journalism teacher about this example of rumormongering, maybe write a paper on it (heh, combining fanboy interest with school, nice!).

I want to stop for a second to give props to the CanMag article linked at the top, because they are accurate in giving the context (that Joss was talking about current rumors), and giving Joss' entire quote. Yay good journalists! Also a "yay good journalists" to Variety for this (as gossi quoted): By the way, Serenity is listed in Variety under "Films that are not quite disasters but which hardly did enough biz to warrant a sequel". That's fair, and it's accurate.

The BDHs, including Joss, always say (as QuoterGal reminded us) that if the opportunity comes again, they will all say "yes" to more Serenity. There could always be something new years from now. No one has shut the door on that, clearly. And, extra bonus, years from now no one will remember the irresponsible and inaccurate interweb rumors that we're talking about at this moment! ;-)

In the end, though, I'm afraid gossi and I must join together in publicly doing the Dance of Shame and Blame (well, for me the dance is sort of interpretive hand gestures, much like hula, but you'll get the idea of it). I'll do a lot of winking and facial expressions, too, like this one -- ;-)

Here are some ABSOLUTELY TRUE statements of factiness. Gentlemen, start your websites.

1) Wonder Woman has finally been cast. To no one's surprise, we eschewed all those tired movie and TV personalities and cast the interweb star "Lonelygirl", or whatever her actual name is. Congratulations, whomever!

2) I've got a thirteen episode commitment from the CW, so get ready for the long-awaited "Primative and Cheese Man". She's the first Slayer, he's a meaningless hallucination -- can they put aside their differences long enough to fight crime?

3) "CLEM!" Broadway. The number where he eats Rum Tum Tuggle will make you laugh and cry and throw up in your mouth slightly.

4) I will absolutely, posatively never ever do any kind of Serenity sequel or spinoff unless a studio asks me. Politely. Or meanly, that's cool too.

5) Warren Ellis's beard has a foyer. It's quite nice: shaker furniture, and a cute ceramic umbrella stand.

6) Kelly MacDonald and Gong Li have got to stop fighting over me 'cause who are they embarrassing? Themselves, that's all.

7) I'm tired of me.

Right. Cue chaos. And yes, number seven is more or less true. But my little britjaunt is through (Alexis rocked "All My Sons") and I'm grindstone bound, so I won't be feeding any more rumorsites for a while. There's only one way to stop all this insanity, and that's to produce some actual work for people to write about. So I'll do that.

Here's a thing: when "Firefly" was cancelled, my heart got broke. Sounds a bit much, but it changed me. Not even "Serenity" could patch that wound. I'm wearier, warier -- after all those years as a movie writer, you'd think I'd be prepared for another lesson on my unimportance in the scheme of things, but I wasn't. There are two very separate worlds: the marketplace, and the bustling bazaar that is my brain. The brain place is crowded with goods, ideas, sequels, spinoffs, animated versions, miniseries, radio dramas -- this is just the used goods. All the new wares are in there as well and it's deafening. Once I create a verse I never let go of it. And figuring out how much of my energy should be devoted to reawakening the projects you all love with the actors and characters I all love, and how much should be forging ahead and creating entirely new works (which you are contractually obligated to love) is exhausting. More than you know. You know the horse caught bwtween two pools of water? Add seven pools, and make the horse wicked A.D.D. The other world, the marketplace, I don't even begin to understand or predict. All these rumor of projects or the death of projects... When the two worlds align and something actually happens, whatever it is, you guys know I'll be on this site as soon as I'm allowed to be. And I'll be very very clear. There is no news. Not never, just now. I'm off to lunch with Lonelygirl.

I think that those who don't have artist or writer brains can never quite understand that a creation doesn't just pop out. Which I guess is why it's so much easier for the suits to view that creation as a product instead of art--and there is no doubt in my mind that Joss Whedon makes art. And until art is more important than money in these United States... oh, yeah, right.

Here's to hoping that someday soon the "marketplace" will catch up to the quick and slippery Whedon brain. As long as it has the Whedon sensibliity, I don't care what comes out of it. To keep careless folk from trying to make your words serve their ends through twisty dissemination, why not broadcast your message through intermittent podcasts? I can't stand "heart got broke" and "tired of me" -- I really can't. Since I do appreciate Joss's sharing all that that with us, I will. But my withers are wrung, I must say. Not since 12/13/02 or so have I quite heard that note...

I have a lot of stuff I'd want to say about the "marketplace" but it's a little inappropriate at the moment. Horses in outer space being unthinkable and other suchlike from the Some of the Suits keeps ringing in my brain, and I've met a few of the Arbiters of the Hollywood Bazaar in my local travails, so I'm never terribly... optimistic? about the Common Denominators of the Marketplace. I'm always glad to be proven wrong, though. In fact, it's a hobby.

Joss should always remember that WHEDONesque is the non-crappy, non-planet where he's the hero.

(Jossir, 'cause you don't have enough on your TO DO, could you please add "ANDREW: The Musical" or "How I Overcame Swimmer's Ear" ??? I'm everso still waiting...)

But as long as I was not entirely wrong about the heart smushage and the you not being so into you these days, I may be right about this: You're a teacher. Archetype: mentor. Even in your interviews, you dole out the wisdom. It's possible you might like you more if your day contained more mentoring, like it did when you had to teach directors and writers and actors and cetera how to make your shows. Not just posting this because I desperately need to read Learn To Write the Joss Whedon Way, and probably writing a book wouldn't do it for you anyway. But some person-to-person, or some person-to-people, wisdom-sharing on a regular basis might be the thing. And it's the sort of thing successful folk in their 40s do. And you can be sure that every writer who's ever expressed appreciation to you for what you've shown them has meant it!

And if you don't . . . I don't want to scare you, but I see sci fi going to the dancing teddy bears. Lum-lum, la la la la la, lum lum!

A heartening thought for writers everywhere:

Regarding the argument summarized in James Shapiro's A Year in the Life of William Shakespeare that the Second Quarto of Hamlet is an early draft and the Folio version is the revised draft: I screwed it up last time I mentioned it. That's not the heartening part.

Chapter Two of Ron Rosenbaum's The Shakespeare Wars goes deeper into the debate and mentions a very neat thing: The on-line Enfolded Hamlet. Rosenbaum thinks the Enfolded Hamlet, which cleverly allows you to see line by line how Q2 and F differ, actually make it possible to glean Shakespeare's thought processes as he revised. Rosenbaum makes a nice, intuitive case and the Enfolded Hamlet is definitely interesting as a (possible) illumination of WS's artistic choices.

So writers feeling low, remember:

1. Shakespeare felt he had to revise.

2. Shakespeare felt he had to revise frakkin' Hamlet!

I'm loving Astonishing (and I've picked up the Runaways hardcover, to catch me up some backstory - it's good, but will be better when Joss gets to write it), I'm hanging out for those Buffy comics and more Serenity comics, I'm looking forward to seeing what he does with Wondy Gal, and I'm just dying for Goners to get off the ground. And anything else which Joss comes up with.

Yeah, Kiddo (how fun to get to write your name, I feel so 23-Skidoo,) as I've mentioned before, for some time I've been feeling like I don't want to be calling out for Joss to, "Paint a Starry Night again, man." Much as I'll always want to see it again and again.

Anything else ain't worth the Toad's Wild Ride that creation (and selling it) creates for the creator.

And since playing with your effin' heart is what gets it broke, every time, and since it can't be done any other way and stay true, do it at your own pace, to the extent that you can, and really, in a way, f--k all of us, the clamouring hoards, if we're part of what's pulling you all different whichaways. I don't mean that in a cruel way about us, rather in a Taking-Care-Of-You-and-Your'n kindof way.

I went with a load of the Browncoats to see the play at the very last minute, after I saw Joss' post in this topic praising it. I got a cancellation seat right at the front (in between an actor from Brookside and one from Hollyoakes).

Anyway, we saw Alexis outside the theatre. He looked quite pleased there was a group of people who turned up who knew who he was. Either that or he is good at acting. There's two photos which will pop up online from it - one is Alexis wearing a "I believe in the cockamouse" badge (which amuses me because that is my signature on one of the many websites I use). The other is one where it looks like somebody is slapping Alexis. No, I've no idea either.

He wondered off with his Marks and Spencer bag after a while. And got lost and came back.

By the way, major kudos to Joss for knowing about the Lonelygirl youtube thing.

Very cool. Hmm, we know he's good at acting. Let's just assume he was also pleased ;).

Joss is pop-culture dude (as well as the other kind, he's omni-cultural) so i'm not amazed his finger's on the pulse. Lonelygirl was a pretty big deal though, even i've heard of her and quite often these things just slide right by me like hip ships in the night.

(BTW, tell me it wasn't Anna Friel, i'd hate to have to not talk to you ever again in a fit of irrational jealousy ;)

While this thread has turned into the "We love Joss Whedon"(TM) thread I'd like to comment about the original subject of it that while I will never tire of Joss and his works the seemingly complete and utter incompetence and/or wilful misinterpretation shown by many (internet) journalists in reporting even this simple, small little news item has tired me immensely.

There was a massive amount of empty seats up around us in the circle because a school group cancelled. Since we had to send the OTHER school group who were actually there to the special hell over and over again... I must say I'm glad there wasn't a second school...

He makes some good points though that I wish more people would accept. Serenity is not dead, and not forgiving! BUT, Joss is only human and has to move on with his career. Wonder Woman has a shot at being the blockbuster we deserve, and Goners could turn out to be the best horror movie ever made (or a cheese fest, depends on the studio...) and we have to look ahead not keep dragging the guy down wanting more of the same. Lets embrace the future already! We'll get more serenity... just after Joss exceeds Peter Jackson on the studio must-have list.
