I think it's wonderful when people embrace the good part of the culture of their parents and ancestors. I kind of hope to come to grips with my parents' homeland sometime.

It gave me kind of a start seeing "Pristina, Serbia," though that's technically correct. Pristina is the capital of Kosovo, which is still legally, if not effectively, part of Serbia. I'm with you on the 'embracing the ancestors' culture', Browncoat, but getting involved in Balkan politics as an American is not something I'm sure I'd do even if my heritage was there.

Yeah...the problem right now is that even if I had a desire to go to Asia (I'll explain why in a second) it's a) way too hard to get in and out and b) they don't seem to like people who have left and returned as "tourists"...thus, if I don't feel welcome, why go?

Although China today is a troubled place, what a wonderful and rich history! Culture, language, architecture, cuisine, medicine (acupuncture, herbs, etc.) -- many wonderful things have come to the world from China. I experience chronic pain & spasms, and the best relief I get is from acupuncture -- thanks, ancient and medieval China! :-)

And the people of a country are different from the government -- there are many Americans who are proud of their country, but disagree strongly with the current government. The people shouldn't be condemned by the actions of their leaders (unless we are talking about individuals who are out there helping the leaders do bad things, but I would bet most people are just innocent bystanders). Even the Dalai Lama is not mad at the ordinary people or history of China, just because the current government is doing violent and oppressive things to his own country and people.

I would agree that going to China now may not be satisfying, but study of China before the current problems might give you a sense of embracing your ancestors' culture, Browncoat!

(course this one would be a leetle harder to arrange. My people would have to speak to her people - which in my case would mean actually getting some people -, time off work would need to be arranged, huge sums of money transacted, it'd be a whole big thing)
